Today’s Standard of Care:
Drug Injections
The first-in-line therapy for pain management often involves drug injections (corticosteroid), administered using 18-23 gauge needles. These injections offer relief that can last from several weeks to months. However, their usage is limited to 2-4 times annually due to potential side effects, including tissue weakening and hyperglycemia. When re-treatment intervals are exceeded, clinicians may consider alternative interventions such as other drugs, radiofrequency ablation, surgery, or neuromodulation.
Enter the Injectrode:
Replacing Repeat Drug Injections
Instead of continuing with more drug injections, or oral drugs (opioids, NSAIDs, etc.), our vision is to replace drugs with the Injectrode: a simple needle-based placement (18 gauge) of the device minimizes or eliminates the need for surgery. Our goals are no sutures to close the wound and no visible scars. Once placed, the Injectrode creates a low impedance path for electrical signals from just underneath the skin down to the nerve that transmits the pain signals.
External Stimulation:
Pain Relief via Electrical Signals
Our external pulse generator (EPG) provides the electrical signals, sometimes called waveforms, to interface with the nerve inside the body. It sends the signals through the skin to the Injectrode which transfers these to the nerve. Once the electrical signals reach the nerve, they modulate the pain information a patient may feel. The beauty of neuromodulation is that the "dose" of the electrical signal can be changed by the EPG with clinician supervision.

To lower the barriers for both patients and clinicians and to determine if neuromodulation is an option earlier in the pain treatment timeline, there needs an easy, fully reversible, way to try it out. That's why we designed the Injectrode to be easily removed with either a small 5mm incision or through an 18 gauge needle. Our approach is less invasive and uses fewer resources, making it possible to treat more patients per day.
There is a Clear Clinical Need
Over 52 million U.S. adults suffer from chronic pain, with 13 million new cases annually. Current treatments mainly involve opioids and other drug injections, but there's an increasing demand for quicker, drug-free therapies that suit the typical 20-minute visit. Although effective, current neuromodulation treatments are less common due to their longer and more complex procedures, underscoring the urgent need for more practical pain management solutions.
